One of the most profound Names of Allah is Al-Qareeb—the One who is Near. This divine attribute offers believers comfort, reassurance, and a deeper understanding of their relationship with their Creator. Allah’s nearness is not a single concept but manifests in distinct and meaningful ways that shape faith, worship, and daily life.

Scholars explain that Allah’s nearness is of two types: a general nearness and a special nearness. The general nearness refers to Allah’s encompassing knowledge, power, and awareness. Allah knows everything that occurs in the universe, every action His servants perform, and even what hearts conceal. Nothing escapes His observation or control. This nearness applies to all creation without exception and reflects His absolute authority and omniscience.
The second type is a special nearness, granted only to specific people—those who are sincere, devoted, and mindful of Allah. This nearness is expressed through mercy, love, guidance, protection, and response to supplication. Allah states in the Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning): “When My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the one who calls upon Me.” This closeness produces tangible effects: Allah accepts deeds, relieves distress, guides His servants, and honors their duʿāʾ.
Importantly, Allah’s nearness does not contradict His exaltedness. He is above His Throne, yet close to His servants in a manner befitting His majesty. The Prophet ﷺ clarified this when he told his companions not to raise their voices in remembrance, reminding them that they were calling upon One who is All-Hearing and Near.
Islam also teaches practical means to draw closer to Allah. Among the greatest is sujūd (prostration). The Prophet ﷺ said that the closest a servant is to Allah is while in prostration, encouraging believers to increase supplication at that moment. Fulfilling obligatory acts of worship is the foundation of nearness, followed by voluntary deeds, which elevate a believer to the level of being loved by Allah. Night prayer (qiyām al-layl) is another powerful means, as Allah draws near to His servants during the last third of the night, inviting them to ask, seek forgiveness, and call upon Him.
The nearness of Allah also appears in three major manifestations mentioned in the Qur’an: mercy, help, and response. His mercy is close to those who perfect their worship with sincerity and adherence to the Sunnah. His help comes at moments when worldly means fail, as demonstrated in the story of Ṭālūt and Jālūt, where steadfast faith led to divine victory against overwhelming odds. Finally, Allah’s response to supplication reassures believers that they need no intermediaries—Allah hears and answers directly.
Knowing that Allah is Al-Qareeb nurtures love, humility, sincerity, and mindfulness. It instils a sense of security and encourages believers to avoid sin out of awareness and reverence. Whether in public or private, Allah is always near—hearing, seeing, and responding. This realization transforms worship from routine actions into a living, intimate connection with the Most Merciful.
